Shock and shock

I just back from lunch. When I tried my luck again to log in to Malaysiakini (I failed to access it at all this morning) I had these shock news in front of me.

Temporary prison slated for Bukit Jalil

The government is planning to build a temporary detention centre in Bukit Jalil due to over population at the Kuala Lumpur Remand Centre (formerly Pudu Jail).

A Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Public Affairs Department spokesperson, who declined to be named, said the project is still in the PLANING stages.

“Initially, the government announced that the site would be a reserve land, and there was a plan to turn it into a cemetery,” she added. However, she said the government has now allocated a portion of the land to build the temporary detention centre.
“Since the project involves the Land Office and other agencies, it will be a lengthy process,” she added.

Shock over township plan for UM campus

Former academician Dr Syed Husin Ali has expressed shock over news that Universiti Malaya (UM) will relocate its campus from Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, to a large swath of undeveloped land in Sepang Selangor. “I was shocked and a great number of the UM Alumni have expressed consternation on hearing that there is a plan to relocate UM to Sepang,” said Syed Husin in a statement today

The move is reportedly part of a property developer’s proposal to turn the 300ha campus into a commercial and residential township to complement its RM1.2 billion Damansara City project.

According to Business Times yesterday, GuocoLand Bhd - a property developer controlled by billionaire banker Quek Leng Chan - has made a bid for the university grounds. Citing sources, the newspaper said the company intends to develop a commercial and residential township on the area, which has an estimated gross development value of RM10 billion.

UPDATED:

Meanwhile, UM vice-chancellor Rafiah Salim has denied receiving a proposal from Quocoland to develop Lembah Pantai, according to Sin Chew Daily today.

The daily also reported Higher Education Minister Mustapha Mohamed as saying there would not be development in the area, describing the university grounds as having significant historical and cultural value.

Mind you, still in PLANNING not yet approve.

Temporary prison slated for Bukit Jalil, hmmmm…..I just have a very strange feeling. Perhaps we should carry a gun on the road after that??

Actually it makes sence la. It would be cheaper for universities to be located in rural areas and make more comercial areas for business in KL.

KJ: nicktay, thanks for drop by. The UM campus is a historical campus and unique. You can’t buy history with billion Ringgit Malaysia, or USD or EURO. KL is really not suitable to have more and more commercial areas. It is already more than enough.

i am shocked. i’m a post grad in UM, and i’m sentimental about it. while they’re in destroy mode, they could also demolish the national museum to make way for a hotel, cos no one goes there anyway, and it’s really old and of no use to anyone.
