How many “police” we need to keep our society in order?

Rela chief: Give us more power

If he had his way, People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) director-general Zaidon Asmuni would like to see the body equipped with even wider powers than it now holds.

“We want not only the power to check passports and travel documents. If you ask me, we want more than that. We want the power to investigate and prosecute in court,” he said in an interview.*

“But who am I to ask for this? We just follow decisions made by the top. For now, we will follow whatever is stated in the law.”

* my personal opinion, they should not give more power. We are not and we don’t prefer live in “police” country.

We have so many enforcement forces in our society. However, have these forces really help to make our society nice to stay, secure to go out, safe for kids play around, or the other way round?

Read this piece of news, do you think they are already out of line?

Food court operator sues Rela

SEREMBAN: A food court operator has filed a suit against Rela for alleged abuse of power and corruption.
Chen Yau Choy, 57, claimed that Rela officer Mohamad Yusof entered his Cahaya Food Court in Ampang, here, and displayed his firearm without any reason, scaring away customers.

Not yet, we have more to read. This really makes me feel very uncomfortable

Two days later, Mohamad came with a team of Rela officers to the food court at 9pm to detain Chen but was unsuccessful as Chen called the police.
A few hours later, Mohamad returned with his team and detained and handcuffed Chen. Chen said he was detained in a police lock-up at the Ampang police station for 11 hours.

We have heard before a group of municipal enforcement officers walked into citizen private premises (a shop, in this case) and dragged a person out from the shop (Up to date, no further news reported in mainstream newspapers, what’s going on there?) And, now we have Rela abused the power (not the first case reported) came after a harmless Malaysian or tax payer.

A few hours later, Mohamad returned with his team and detained and handcuffed Chen.

The Rela does not have the right to put any Malaysian under arrest. If they do, what is the meaning we have Police in this country? Police have to show a court warrant in order to put you under arrest (know about your rights) but sounds like they are more powerful than Police, same as the municipal enforcement case before.

Where is the order of the system? I think these forces suppose to help and protect the society but what we have now? Do you support this, Lawyers unanimous in call for the demise of RELA and the usage of only professional law enforcement personnel in Malaysia?
